The United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, responded to a letter from Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) and stated that Donald Trump’s government should maintain the imposition of new tariffs on Brazilian products. The announcement of the new tariff against Brazil took place about a week after a meeting between Flávio and Trump.

The US tariff against Brazilian exports, as well as the revocation of visas of ministers of the STF and the federal government and the application of economic sanctions under the Magnitsky Law, were encouraged by Flávio’s brother, former deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), in an attempt to avoid the conviction of former president Jair Bolsonaro in the coup plot process. Eduardo was convicted by the STF for the crime of coercion.

Since last year, Eduardo Bolsonaro has been in the United States and lost his parliamentary mandate for missing sessions of the Chamber of Deputies.

In a letter sent on Tuesday (23), Rubio reaffirmed the US position on policies that allegedly harm the North American economy, including Pix. Rubio responded to a letter in which Flávio Bolsonaro, following his brother’s actions, asked that the US not impose 25% tariffs on Brazilian products, as recommended by a commercial investigation into the American country.

In the letter, Rubio states that the investigation conducted in the country into business practices made “it clear that we continue to have substantial differences in resolving the issues identified in this investigation.”

Rubio cites differences such as digital commerce, electronic payment services, unfair preferential tariffs, anti-corruption law enforcement, intellectual property protection, access to the ethanol market and illegal deforestation.

“Any interested party in Brazil can participate in the public comment period on the proposed responsive action and the public hearing,” says Rubio, in reference to a hearing that will take place on July 6th.

Brazilian elections

In the letter, Rubio also spoke about the elections in Brazil. The US secretary stated that the country notes Flávio’s “optimism” regarding the upcoming October elections “and your generous offer to place a transition team at our disposal, if you are elected”.

“The United States stands ready to work cooperatively with the leaders chosen by the Brazilian people to pursue a broad, fair and mutually beneficial trade and investment framework,” says Rubio. “I look forward to the continuation of our dialogue and the deepening of the strategic partnership between our two great nations.”

The secretary ends the letter by saying: “May God bless the United States and Brazil.”
