North Korean leader accuses the US, South Korea and Japan of escalating tensions by holding military exercises in the region

The leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, said on Wednesday (April 10, 2024) that, more than ever, the time has come for his country to be prepared for war.

Kim made the statement during a visit to the Kim Jong-il Military and Political University, the country’s main military university and named after his father, the country’s leader from 1994 to 2011. According to him, the geopolitical issues present in the region raise awareness to the need for North Korea to be ready for armed conflict.

Now is the time to be more fully prepared for war than ever before,” Kim said, according to state agency KCNA. “If the enemy chooses military confrontation, North Korea will deal a mortal blow to the enemy without hesitation, mobilizing all the means at its disposal.

North Korea accuses the United States, South Korea and Japan of increasing tensions by holding joint military exercises in the region.

In February, Kim Jong-un promised that he would not hold dialogue or negotiate with South Korea, whom he called “enemy number 1”. He said he would not hesitate to use all his military might to eliminate enemies if he felt threatened.

According to the government news agency, the Kim Jong-il Military and Political University “trained a large number of North Korean Army commanding officers over the past 50 years”, collaborating with “building a powerful Army”.
