Extremist group says it is frustrated by lack of progress in Gaza truce talks

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday (July 11, 2024) accused Hamas of making demands that are incompatible with the US-brokered ceasefire agreement, although he did not detail what the extremist group is asking for. The criticism comes in a context of continued Israeli attacks on Gaza, with the deaths of civilians and the displacement of families in the enclave.

“I am committed to the US-brokered deal to free our hostages, but the Hamas killers are clinging to demands that contradict the framework agreement and that put Israel in danger.”said the prime minister. The information is from Reuters.

In response, Hamas expressed frustration at the lack of progress in the negotiations, even after making concessions to a US-backed Israeli peace proposal.

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said there was still the possibility of a ceasefire agreement, but highlighted the obstacles in the negotiations.

“There are still miles to go before we close [um acordo]if we are able to close it. So, I don’t want to say it’s immediately around the corner, but it doesn’t have to be very far if everyone comes with the will to do it.”he stated.

US-proposed ceasefire

The phased agreement developed by Washington includes a ceasefire “complete” of 6 weeks that would see the release of 120 hostages, including women, elderly people and wounded people, in exchange for the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

Israel, however, says it agrees only to temporary pauses and that it will only end its operation when Hamas is completely defeated and its military capabilities are rendered unviable.
