President of Colombia said that the “beacon of democracy” is now in Latin America; read other reactions

The presidents of Argentina, Javier Milei, and Colombia, Gustavo Petro, used their social networks on Sunday (June 9, 2024) to speak out about the election for the European Parliament, concluded over the weekend. While the Argentine celebrated the advance of the right in the old continent, the Colombian lamented: “The century of lights goes out”, wrote Petro. Until 4:30 am this Monday (June 10), they were the only Latin American heads of government to comment on the election.

From Thursday (June 6) to Sunday (June 9), voters from the 27 member countries of the EU (European Union) went to the polls to vote for their representatives in the European Parliament. According to projections updated at 9pm on Sunday (June 9) by the electoral commission, the European People’s Party, led by Ursula von der Leyen, current president of the European Commission, maintained the largest group in the European Union Legislature and won 13 more seats, leaving with 189 deputies.

Other nationalist groups advanced in Parliament. With the new composition, right-wing and center-right deputies will be 402 of the total 720, a dominance of 56%. There were 396 before.

In her profile on X (formerly Twitter), Milei mentioned her participation in the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in January this year. At the time, the libertarian stated that the event was “contaminated by the socialist agenda” and that capitalism is the “single tool” that the world has “to end hunger, poverty and misery”.

The Argentine said in the post that he was the target of criticism for his position in Davos: “Review those who vehemently attacked our speech and there you will find the representatives in Argentina of this disastrous agenda that suffered a huge defeat today”, these. “’A single man screaming makes more noise than 100,000 silent men,’ said General San Martín. Wow, we scream”, he added.

Milei also criticized the 2030 Agenda – promoted by the UN (United Nations) for sustainable development, world peace, justice and strengthening institutions, which he called “inhumane agenda designed by bureaucrats, for the benefit of bureaucrats”.

And he concluded: “The West must recover the flags that made it the most prosperous civilizational process in our history: the defense of life, freedom and property of individuals”.

Petro stated in X that “the beacon of democracy is now in Latin America”. According to the Colombian leader, “The wealth distributed by the welfare state anesthetized the European peoples and, as in the past, they reacted against the exoduses that they themselves caused with their wars of conquest, appealing to the Nazis”.

Also according to Petro, the Europeans “react against the poor to defend wealth and power” e “did not notice the rise of fascism”.
