The political crisis involving Argentina’s president, Javier Milei, gained new developments this week, with the disclosure of messages that suggest that his sister and secretary general of the presidency, Karina Milei, would have received payments to ensure the promotion of $ Libra cryptocurrency.
The case, which has already led to a formal impeachment request against the president, is also being investigated by authorities in the United States.
The messages were obtained by the Argentine newspaper La Nación and the specialized website Coindesk and show conversations by US businessman Hayden Davis, one of the creators of cryptocurrency.
In one of the excerpts released, Davis tells an investor that he has “full control” about Milei and that the president “signs what I say and do what I want” because he “sends $$ to his sister.” The entrepreneur denies the authenticity of the messages and says he “doesn’t remember” having sent any similar content.
The Argentine government denied any involvement of Karina Milei in the case. Presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni classified the accusations as “insulting speculation” and stated that “there was no attitude that was against public ethics.”
Despite the official defense, documents reveal that Karina was the main interlocutor between cryptocurrency creators and the government. Entry records at Casa Rosada indicate that Davis has been at the presidential palace at least three times in recent months at meetings authorized by Karina Milei.
Another character in the case, Argentine businessman Mauricio Novelli, would also have acted as an intermediary. According to records, he visited Casa Rosada at least nine times and was received by Karina Milei.
The businessman was also three times at Quinta de Olivos, the president’s official residence. The government did not comment on the visits.
The revelation of messages and connections between those involved has expanded the pressure on Milei. The Peronist opposition filed an impeachment request in the House of Representatives, arguing that the president abused his position to promote a financial blow.
In addition, parliamentarians try to install an inquiry committee to investigate the facts. The impact is also reflected in public opinion: second recent research, rejection of Milei has grown ten percentage points since the outbreak of the scandal.
In the midst of the crisis, Milei tries to minimize the case. During an interview, he said that “if you go to the casino and lose money, what is the complaint?” Suggesting that $ Pound investors have taken on the risks of the cryptocurrency market.
The statement generated criticism from opposition leaders and financial analysts, pointing out that Milei’s public endorsement was a determining factor in attracting investors to digital assets.
In the United States, the FBI and the Justice Department also received formal complaints against Milei and those responsible for the scheme. The investigation can lead to sanctions and lawsuits against those involved, which would further expand the crisis of the Argentine government.
The scandal also impacted the markets: after the sudden fall of $ pound, other cryptocurrencies associated with political personalities such as $ Melania and $ Trump, were also affected.
Given the negative repercussion, Milei’s allies begin to distance themselves. Former President Mauricio Macri, in a recent interview, criticized the crisis management and said Milei was “misguided.”
Macri’s words were interpreted as a direct reference to Karina Milei, whose influence on the government is increasingly questioned.
The future of the Milei government is uncertain. The $ Libra scandal has become the president’s biggest political challenge so far, with developments that can affect his popularity and governability in the coming months.
