Venezuela President Nicolás Maduro presented to the National Assembly (AN) a constitutional reform project with 80 new articles “to strengthen participatory and leading democracy”. The announcement made on Saturday (15) took place during the assembly session for the 206 years of the installation of the Congress of Angostura (according to the country’s Constituent Congress, implemented by Simon Bolivar).

According to Maduro, the proposal aims to adapt the 1999 Constitution to the new times and the new realities of the country:

“The Constitution expressed the development of political thinking so far. It represented a development of popular power so far and a correlation of forces in the world, and I believe it is still an advanced constitution in the ideas of a new society. But undoubtedly, today’s Venezuela, 2025, is an infinitely superior Venezuela in its human values, in its education, in its culture, in its view of society, in its worldview. We are ready to open the floodgates of a great unifying national debate and for the Venezuelan society and our people to be protagonists of a great historical reform that adapts the 1999 Constitution to the new times, with new ideas to advance a new era of transition For new modernity, ”said Maduro.

As explained, the reform focuses on four points:

  • Expansion and improvement of direct, participatory and leader democracy;
  • Construction of a new society where values ​​and principles are defined for a more humane society by Bolivarianism;
  • New economic model with diversification in search of self -sustainability and independence;
  • Update of legal, constitutional and political terms of all constitutional gear.

In the announcement, the president also stressed other aspects of the reform that deal with communication, use of artificial intelligence, use of new technologies, as well as about physical and mental health.

For this new step, a National Commission for the Reform, composed by: Attorney General of the Republic, Tarek William Saab; Executive Vice President Delcy Rodríguez; ANP Deputy Hermann Escarra; and the first combatant, Cilia Flores. They will be responsible for preparing a project consultation and presentation process for the population.
