The Venezuelan government announced, earlier this week, a partnership with the Landless Workers’ Movement (MST) for agricultural production in the South American country.
“President Nicolás Maduro is fulfilling the project dreamed of by Commander Hugo Chávez and the MST,” wrote former Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza in a post shared on Tuesday on his Telegram channel.
“Lands in Venezuela for them to transfer [o MST] their knowledge in agroecological production to our community peasantry and to produce for life, on previously unimaginable scales”, added Arreaza.
According to the former foreign minister, the first stage of the partnership will include the delivery of 10,000 hectares of land in the state of Bolívar, the largest in the country, to the MST. A propaganda video released by the diplomat states that the region has good productivity and mentions that it should be used for planting corn, beans and soybeans.
The Brazilian movement confirmed to Folha de S.Paulo that it will send a technical team to the country to “study” the characteristics of the region and “propose an agroforestry development project”.
In the final part of the video released by Arreaza, MST coordinator Simone Magalhães appears thanking local authorities for their cooperation.
“From our Landless Workers’ Movement in Brazil, from our entire organization, we are grateful and very happy and honored to be here and we want to thank you for this invitation. What we saw here is a beautiful experience, people producing. We are grateful to see so much fertile land with an incredible productive capacity,” says Simone in the video.
