President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva congratulated on Monday (24) the leader of the Democratic Union (CDU), Friedrich Merz, for the victory in the parliamentary elections of Germany. In an official statement, Lula stressed the long tradition of cooperation between the two countries and defended the continuity of partnership on strategic topics such as global governance, multilateralism and sustainable development.
“Germany is a crucial country and crucial partner in Brazil in the defense of democracy and multilateralism, promoting sustainable development and the protection of human rights,” said the Brazilian president.
He also pointed out that the relationship between the two countries should advance in agendas such as the implementation of the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union and the realization of COP-30, which will take place in Brazil in 2025.
“The implementation of the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union and the realization of COP 30 in Brazil are facilitating paths of this process,” said Lula.
The exchange of greetings signals the Brazilian government’s intention to maintain close ties with Berlin, despite the change in German leadership. Lula emphasized that the two countries will continue to expand convergences and exploit complementarities to strengthen their positions on the international scene.
The relationship between Brazil and Germany has been marked by frequent dialogues on environmental and economic guidelines. In the Scholz government, Germany announced investments for the preservation of the Amazon and supported Brazil’s return to diplomatic protagonism. The expectation now is that, under Merz, bilateral negotiations remain stable and productive.
