PCdoB’s Secretary of International Relations, Ana Prestes, was emphatic in commenting on the public letter released on Wednesday (28), which requires the Brazilian government to adopt hard sanctions against Israel. The document, which calls for the embargo on oil export, the breakup of the commercial treaty and the suspension of diplomatic relations, marks the 600 days of the massacre in the Gaza Strip and is signed by artists, intellectuals, parliamentarians and social entities.
“The letter is another extremely important initiative to denounce the Genocide of the Palestinian people and the ethnic cleansing promoted by Israel in Gaza. It is also a legitimate pressure for the Brazilian government to go beyond the words and adopt concrete retaliation measures,” said Ana Prestes, who is also signatory.
She recalled that after nearly two years of continuous attacks, even European Union countries adopted sanctions against the government of Benjamin Netanyahu. “This is the first time that there is a coordinated action in Europe in this regard. It’s increasingly clear to the whole world that, without harsh actions, Israel will eliminate an entire people, either for the murder, or by expulsion,” he said.
“There is no more space for symbolic diplomacy”
For Ana Prestes, the world approaches a rupture point that requires firm responses from the international community. “As the Chancellor of China said, either concrete actions are taken or we will all be witnesses of the greatest humanitarian tragedy of the 21st century,” he warned.
The communist leader reiterated that more symbolic gestures are not enough. According to her, measures such as suspension of the sale of weapons, energy embargo, end of commercial agreements and the removal of ambassadors are legitimate instruments of international law in the face of war crimes and genocide.
“Either it acts now, or will continue to watch on television at the end of an entire people. The time of conciliatory diplomacy is over. It’s time for hard actions,” he emphasized.
Letter denounces complicity of Brazilian trade with the massacre
The letter organized by the BDS campaign (boycott, divestment and sanctions) denounces that Brazil continues to export oil and maintaining military agreements with Israel, even after the decision of the International Court of Justice (CIJ) that liables omission states against genocides.
Signed by names such as Chico Buarque, Carol Proner, Milton Hatoum, Emir Sader, Vladimir Safatle, as well as movements such as CUT, UJS, UBM and the Palestinian Arab Federation of Brazil, the letter requires the country to “break diplomatic and commercial relations with the Zionist state of Israel”.
“We are convinced that it is time for our country to give the example of fulfilling international law, especially in the context of its leadership in global forums such as the G20 and the UN working group about the creation of a Palestinian state,” the text says.
Sanctions are legal and moral duty, say signatories
The signatories recall that Brazil supported UN resolutions and CIJ decisions that impose concrete obligations on countries against the ongoing genocide. “The regime of occupation and apartheid Israeli is a fact. It is up to states to break economic and diplomatic relations until Israel complies international law,” they say.
In addition to Ana Prestes, parliamentarians such as Erika Hilton, Guilherme Boulos, Fernanda Melchionna and Henrique Vieira reinforce the demand for measures that exceed rhetoric and have a real effect on containing violence.
“These measures, if adopted by our country and under a leadership of Brazil’s wingspan, will certainly serve as an example to other governments. A wave of effective solidarity is necessary to end this carnage,” the document concludes.
