If the measure is put into practice in the West Bank, a scenario that is already happening in some locations in the Gaza Strip, such as the Beit Hanoun region, in the north of that territory, would be repeated, where a similar measure was authorized by the military forces that control the area.
The previous day, Ben-Gvir led more than 4,200 Israeli settlers and members of far-right groups during the invasion of the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex in occupied East Jerusalem. The action was one of the biggest raids on the site, but not the only one carried out this year.
Attack on Nablus
Hours before the minister’s statement was published, Israeli settlers held a demonstration in the Nablus region, in the north of the West Bank.
According to a correspondent for the Qatari channel Al Jazeera, the act was accompanied by a large contingent of Israeli police and security forces, surrounding the village and imposing a siege.
The correspondent reported that, during the event, incidents were recorded in which settlers attacked Palestinian people who were alone along the way, or who began firing firearms at larger groups.
Between actions carried out by settlers and members of the Israeli security forces who escorted the event, there were at least four Palestinian deaths, dozens of injuries and dozens of arrests.
Israeli forces justified the action by claiming that it was a protest against an alleged aggression carried out by Palestinians against a group of settlers who were hiking in the Nablus region.
The Israeli version also states that one of the Palestinians tried to take a firearm from the hands of a security agent who was protecting the settlers.
The Palestinian National Authority (ANP) issued a statement condemning the episode and accusing Israeli settlers and Israeli security forces of “promoting acts of provocation against the local population of Nablus”.
