Yoav Gallant says officials, including Netanyahu, must be investigated for national security missteps on October 7
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant proposed on Thursday (July 11, 2024) the creation of an independent commission to investigate security failures that led to the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which started the conflict against the extremist group. The measure had already been ruled out by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“We are obliged to investigate at a national level in order to rebuild public trust. This is a condition for our ability to perform our tasks.”he declared in a speech during the cadet graduation ceremony.
Despite pressure to implement the measure, the authority to establish such a commission lies with the government.
According to Gallant, it would be “a complete correction procedure”. The proposed inquiry would investigate the country’s top officials, including Netanyahu and Gallant himself.
The minister also assured that the investigation at the national level will help the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) to verify the conditions to carry out activities.
