Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (Likud, right) says that the election will follow the date set by law; vote will be the 1st since the Hamas attack, in 2023
Israel will hold general elections on October 27, the prime minister’s coalition said this Sunday (Jul 12, 2026). Benjamin Netanyahu (Likud, right), 76 years old. The vote will be held on the date stipulated by law and will mark the first time, since 1988, that an Israeli government has fully completed its 4-year term. The information is from Reuters.
The election date had been undefined since May, when the Israeli Parliament (Knesset) approved its dissolution and opened space for the early calling of the election. However, the leader of the ruling coalition, Ofir Katz, informed a Knesset committee that the original schedule will be maintained.
The Knesset will go into recess next week without the need for a new vote to end the current legislature. Before the break, Netanyahu’s coalition will try to complete the analysis of projects considered priorities, including proposals to reform the Judiciary, measures aimed at the ultra-Orthodox community and changes to party financing rules.
ELECTION
The election will be the first since the Hamason October 7, 2023, which triggered conflicts in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon and with Iran. The election is also being held while Netanyahu responds to a corruption trial.
Opinion polls cited by Reuters indicate that the current coalition of nationalist and religious parties would lose its majority in Parliament. Despite this, the opposition has not yet consolidated an alternative with a sufficient majority to form a government.
Netanyahu is the longest-serving prime minister in Israel’s history – more than 18 years. He was prime minister from 1996 to 1999, from 2009 to 2021 and returned to power in 2022. Netanyahu bseeks to remain in command of the country.
