Passage connects the Gaza Strip to Egypt and is a gateway for humanitarian aid in the Palestinian enclave

Israel said this Tuesday (May 7, 2024) that it had assumed “operational control” from the Palestinian part of the border between Rafah, in the south of the Gaza Strip, and Egypt. On Telegram, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) stated that the passage “was being used for terrorist purposes”.

The border was used at the beginning of the conflict to remove foreigners who were in the Gaza Strip – including Brazilians. Today, it is the gateway for humanitarian aid into the Palestinian enclave.

The city of Rafah is a refuge for Palestinians who have fled their homes since the start of the war. It is estimated that more than 1 million displaced people are in the region. On Monday (May 6), the IDF asked civilians to leave parts of Rafah. After the order to withdraw, Israeli soldiers carried out attacks in the region.

Following intelligence indicating that the Rafah crossing in the east of the city was being used for terrorist purposes, IDF troops managed to establish operational control on the Gaza side of the border”, declared the Israeli Army.

The military added that “attacked and eliminated Hamas terrorist targets in the Rafah area, including military structures, underground infrastructure and additional terrorist infrastructure from which Hamas operated in the Rafah area”.
