The Iranian Revolutionary Guards (GRI) reacted, this Saturday (13), to the Israeli attack on the Iranian embassy, in Damascus, in early April, which killed members of the country’s top military brass.

The Iranian response began in the early evening local time and includes the launch of long-range missiles and drones.

On Iranian state TV, the guard claims the offensive was ordered by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and was under the guidance of Tehran’s Army General Staff.

The Persian country’s diplomatic mission to the UN justified the response and announced the end of the operation. Tehran also said that it will not let any retaliation for this morning’s attack go unnoticed and sent a message to the United States.

“Based on Article 51 of the United Nations Charter relating to legitimate defense, Iran’s military action occurred in response to aggression by the Zionist regime [em referência a Israel] against our diplomatic facilities in Damascus [em referência ao ataque à embaixada iraniana na Síria, ocorrido em 1º de abril]. The matter can be considered closed,” said the diplomatic corps in New York.

“However, if the Israeli regime makes another mistake, Iran’s response will be considerably more severe. It is a conflict between Iran and the rogue Israeli regime, from which the United States MUST STAY AWAY!”, he threatened.

On the first day of April, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) bombed a building attached to the Iranian consulate in Damascus in an airstrike that killed Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander of the revolutionary guard. Zahedi operated within Quds, the GRI’s elite intelligence service.

The Israeli action was seen by Tehran as a serious aggression, which even called the United Nations. The UN Security Council, however, rejected a draft Russian statement condemning the attack in Syria. The United States, France and the United Kingdom were the member countries that shielded Israel from crime.

The operation is Iran’s first attack on Israeli territory since the beginning of the conflict, which began on October 7, 2023, and raises fears in the international community of a regional escalation of the conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has already killed more than 30,000. Palestinians.
