On Saturday night (13), Iran began attacks with drones and missiles against the territory of Israel. The information was confirmed by the Iranian state agency IRNA, Israeli authorities and the USA.
“The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps [Forças Armadas do Irã] announced on Sunday morning that dozens of drones and missiles were fired at the occupied territories and positions of the Zionist regime”, published IRNA.
The action would be in retaliation against the destruction of Iran’s consulate in Damascus, Syria, caused by Israeli bombing on April 1 that left a senior Iranian military officer dead.
Moments after the attack, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said attacking the diplomatic headquarters was “attacking our soil” and promised “punishment” for Israel.
“The malicious Zionist regime, which is all evil and error, has added another error to its mistakes by launching an attack on Iran’s consulate in Syria. […] He must be punished and he will be punished,” he said.
The episode raises tension between Tehran and Tel Aviv and increases the risk of a regionalization of the conflict that has been taking place between the Israelis and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The massacre committed by Israeli forces in the region has left more than 33,000 dead, most of them Palestinian women and children.
Earlier on Saturday, Iran had already seized a commercial vessel linked to Israel in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to IRNA, the Portuguese-flagged MCS Aries ship would be managed by Zodiac Maritime, a company linked to Israeli businessman Eyal Ofer. The vessel was taken by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Special Naval Force into Iranian territorial waters.
The action occurred after US President Joe Biden stated this Friday (12) that he expected “sooner or later” an attack from Iran against Israel. “Don’t do it,” threatened the Democrat.
This Saturday, Biden left his residence in Delaware and returned to the White House, in Washington, to address the escalation of tension.
