The spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmaeil Baghaei, once again criticized the United Nations (UN) after a representative of the organization expressed concern about military clashes and Iranian retaliatory attacks against US bases in countries in the region and vessels. According to Baghaei, this is not a question of clashes between the parties, but rather Iran’s response to the attacks carried out by the United States and Israel since February 28.

“Iran has not initiated attacks against the sovereign territory of any country,” he said. According to the spokesperson, attacks against US military bases and installations in the Persian Gulf represent the exercise of the right to self-defense provided for in international law.

“It is completely irresponsible to condemn Iran for defending its sovereignty instead of holding the real aggressors accountable for their violations of international law,” he declared. Baghaei also called on the UN to demand that countries in the region prevent the use of their territories by US forces to launch operations against Iran.

Strait of Hormuz closed

The spokesperson stated that, according to the memorandum of understanding signed between Tehran and Washington, the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened if the United States fulfilled its commitments. Following the US attacks on southern Iran, the Revolutionary Guard declared that the passage will remain closed until Washington ends what it classified as illegal interference in the waterway. Baghaei further stated that as long as the United States continues to fail to fulfill its commitments, Iran will also fail to fulfill its obligations.

At the same time, Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attacks carried out by the United States in the last 24 hours and stated that it will keep the Strait of Hormuz closed. In a statement, the ministry accused Washington of violating the United Nations Charter and compromising efforts to reduce tensions in the Middle East.

According to the Iranian government, the United States attacked transportation infrastructure, fishing vessels, cargo ships and meteorological facilities. The ministry stated that, 25 days after signing the ceasefire understanding, Washington “violated almost all of its components”.

The note also accuses the United States of interfering in the measures adopted by Iran to manage the Strait of Hormuz, which, according to Tehran, caused the return of insecurity in the region and affected commercial navigation. The Iranian government also stated that Washington used the territory and facilities of countries on the southern coast of the Persian Gulf to prepare military operations against Iran. According to the ministry, any source of attacks against the country will be considered a legitimate target for defense actions by the Iranian Armed Forces.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated that the President of the United States, Donald Trump, released “fabricated” information about the negotiations held in Muscat, Oman. According to the ministry, the talks dealt exclusively with a mechanism to manage the Strait of Hormuz and navigation routes. The Iranian government declared that the agreement was not reached because of “overt and covert” pressure from the United States on Oman.

Retaliatory strikes destroy US facilities

The Revolutionary Guard reported that the fifth phase of the retaliatory operation hit United States military installations in Juffair, Bahrain. According to the statement, the attack set fire to military installations. The corporation further stated that missiles and drones destroyed a long-range air surveillance radar and a maritime detection radar in Oman.

Also according to the Revolutionary Guard, the first phase of the operation reached missile and fuel depots at Prince Hassan Air Base, in Jordan. In the second phase, American military installations at Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain were attacked, including helicopter maintenance areas, a hangar housing a P-8 aircraft and a drone command center.

The third and fourth phases targeted US bases in Kuwait. According to the statement, fuel tanks, a Patriot air defense system, a strategic radar, Himars rocket launchers and ammunition depots were destroyed. The Revolutionary Guards further stated that the Strait of Hormuz belongs to Iran and declared that “we will not allow an outlaw, child-killing army on the other side of the world to continue its illegal interference.”
