Iran’s Foreign Ministry accused the United States of violating the memorandum of understanding that established the end of the war that began after the US and Israeli offensive against the country. According to Tehran, in response, the Iranian Armed Forces retaliated against US-linked military targets in the region. It was the first exchange of attacks between the two countries since the signing of the agreement.
In a statement released this Saturday (27), the Iranian government condemned the bombings carried out by the United States on Friday night (26) against areas of the southern coast of Iran. According to the ministry, the attacks hit coastal surveillance facilities and represent a violation of the Charter of the United Nations (UN) and the agreement signed on June 18.
“These savage attacks, which targeted Iran’s coastal surveillance facilities, constitute a clear violation of paragraph 4 of Article 2 of the UN Charter, as well as an explicit violation of the first paragraph of the memorandum of understanding for the end of the imposed war, dated June 18, 2026,” reads an excerpt from the statement.
The ministry also stated that Israel participated in the offensive. “At the same time, the Zionist regime of occupation and apartheidin coordination with the United States, also carried out an attack on Lebanon, which constitutes a clear violation of the first paragraph of the memorandum of understanding that ended the war.”
According to the statement, the Iranian response was based on the right to self-defense provided for in the UN Charter. “By emphasizing Iran’s inherent right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs declares that the Islamic Republic of Iran will defend its sovereignty, security and national interests with all its strength. The defensive attacks by the powerful Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran against targets related to the US aggressor forces were carried out on this basis,” another excerpt from the document reads.
The Iranian government held Washington responsible for the consequences of the escalation and asked the countries on the southern coast of the Persian Gulf to prevent the use of their territories for military actions against Iran. Furthermore, it demanded that the UN Secretary-General, the Security Council and other international bodies adopt measures in the face of what it classified as a violation of the UN Charter and international law by the United States.
The Revolutionary Guard reported that it struck targets linked to US forces near the Strait of Hormuz, but did not specify which locations were attacked. Also this Saturday, Bahrain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, however, reported that the country was targeted by “several Iranian drones” and classified the action as “a clear violation of Western norms and conventions that prohibit attacks on civilian targets and terrorizing innocent people.”
The United States stated that the bombings against Iran were a response to an alleged Iranian attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz that occurred on Thursday (25). Iran took no responsibility for the action.
According to US Central Command, aircraft hit drone depots, missiles and coastal radar bases. The command classified the operation as a “firm response” to the attack on the ship M/V Ever Lovely and stated that there was “unprovoked aggression against commercial shipping by Iranian forces”, which “clearly violated the ceasefire”. Centcom added that “Iran’s dangerous behavior has compromised freedom of navigation at a time when commerce increasingly flows through this vitally important international shipping corridor.”
Earlier, US President Donald Trump stated that Iran acted “unwisely” by launching “at least four unidirectional attack drones against ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz”.
