The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, announced last Sunday (5) that he intends to bring forward the departure of the government to the 20th, the country’s independence day, three weeks before the official end of his mandate. The decision was announced on the social network X. Petro also called on the population for a general mobilization.
The president justified the choice of July 20th with the fact that the dates planned for the transition (August 6th and 7th) would be “tragic” for Colombian history.
“We will do it on July 20th, in all public squares in Colombia. July 20th, the cry of independence of the free people for a free Colombia and social reforms. I wait for you in Bosa and Ciudad Bolívar, in the south and west of Bogotá, for the parade and our cry of National Independence. All and all with the flags of Colombia clean and happy”, wrote Petro.
The Colombian president took the opportunity to defend his government’s legacy, which he has done since the defeat of the Historic Pact in the presidential elections. Last Sunday, Petro said that, when he became president, he would have found a people “full of hunger”, but that he left power knowing that the population would be “eating well, dancing very well and playing football well and without cheating”.
In the publications, Petro also said that Abelardo de la Espriella, the elected candidate, would not have won the election. “The American citizen [Abelardo] did not win the elections in Colombia, they did so from a server with an IP in Los Angeles, California,” he stated.
During the Petro government, the Agrarian Reform promoted in the neighboring country formalized the delivery of more than 2 million hectares to rural communities. At the same time, unemployment fell to 9.2% (the lowest rate in the century), 1.6 million people were lifted out of monetary poverty and the minimum wage increased by 23.4%.
In support of the Petro government, senator Iván Cepeda, defeated in the election, asks the population to mobilize what he called “peaceful civil disobedience” if Espriella does not renounce his American nationality. He also criticizes the fact that the president-elect has threatened to sue Petro in the United States.
