Finance Minister Dario Durigan announced who will take over the new Brazilian Federal Revenue office in Beijing, the first Brazilian office in Asia. The undersecretary of Revenue inspection, Andréia Costa Chaves, will be the head of the representation. The announcement was made at a press conference this Friday (26), during the minister’s official visit to China.
“Chaves is one of the best servants that the Brazilian Public Service has produced and a great leader in the Federal Revenue Service,” said Durigan. The undersecretary was notified of the appointment the day before and will travel to Beijing after administrative procedures.
Goals
The office will have two areas of activity: tax and customs. On the tax front, the representation will facilitate contact with Chinese authorities at a time of changes in the Brazilian system, such as tax reform and minimum taxation on large fortunes.
“It is very important, especially for sectors like agribusiness, which has a very close interface with China, that we have this Federal Revenue bridge here,” said Durigan.
Customs cooperation and combating crime
On the customs front, the office will seek to integrate Brazilian customs intelligence with Chinese intelligence to combat transnational organized crime. Durigan cited as a model the partnership between Brazilian and United States customs, which identified illegal shipments of weapons and synthetic drugs.
“We are also going to offer China the possibility of information on what is at risk from the point of view of organized crime, in which we can couple the intelligence of Brazilian customs with that of Chinese customs,” he declared.
Brazil already has Revenue representations in Mercosur countries and in Washington, in the United States. The opening in China is the first of this administration.
Secretary Cristina Reis, present at the press conference, highlighted that the first head of the office in China is a woman, highlighting gender parity in the secretariats and advisors of Durigan’s management at the ministry.
