According to Franziska Giffey, a man hit her in the head and neck with an object

Former mayor of Berlin Franziska Giffey (SPD, center left) was attacked on Tuesday (May 7, 2024) during a visit to a district library in Berlin, the capital of Germany. According to her, a man hit her in the head and neck with a bag containing heavy items. He stated that he was fine and thanked the “messages of compassion”.

A 74-year-old suspect was arrested by Berlin Police and will appear before a judge to provide clarification. The Public Prosecutor’s Office of the German capital cited the possibility of admitting the suspect to a psychiatric hospital due to a possible mental illness.

Franziska Giffey said she was worried with the possibility of politicians being attacked because of their positions. “There is no justification for these attacks”, declared.

Germany’s political landscape is under tension because of European elections scheduled for June 9 and regional elections scheduled for September.

MEP Matthias Ecke from the Social Democratic Party, led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, also was targeted of attacks. Ecke was the target of kicks and punches from 4 young people on Friday (May 3).

Scholz condemned the attacks this Wednesday (May 8). He stated that they are “outrageous and cowardly”.

“Ignoring is never an option. Because attacks like that of MEP Matthias Ecke and other candidates threaten our democracy. We have to unite against this”, declared.
