President Lula attended, this Tuesday (1), the inauguration ceremony of the elected president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum. The event took place at the San Lázaro Legislative Palace, in Mexico City.

In her speech, the president thanked the heads of state present, including Lula.

On the networks, Lula praised Claudia and said that “the world will be surprised by her” and wished her good work.

“Claudia is the first woman elected president in the history of Mexico. And the world will be surprised by her. Extremely prepared, she will give us great pride and serve as an example for more women in politics. Good luck and good work!”

Still on Monday (30), Lula and the Brazilian delegation met with Sheinbaum, on which occasion the president preached the strengthening of relations between the countries.

On his way out, Lula told journalists: “I hope that, with her way of doing politics, she can help women around the world realize that it is time for women, who are the majority in every country in the world, to definitively assume that politics is a woman’s thing.”

Before that, Lula was with the now former president López Obrador. According to the government, the following topics were addressed by the heads of state: increased trade relations with Mexico; the joint fight of both governments against hunger and poverty; the defense of democracy; and cooperation in various areas, and strengthening Latin American integration.

This year marks 190 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Brazil and Mexico.

According to the government, in 2023, trade between Brazil and Mexico reached a record value of 14.11 billion dollars, an increase of 14.4% compared to 2022.

After the ceremony, the presidential delegation left Mexico City at 2:19 pm local time (5:19 pm Brasília time), expected to arrive in Brazil in the early hours of Wednesday (2).

However, the aircraft experienced technical problems. Thus, the crew decided to return to the airport, but did not land promptly.

To comply with safety protocols, the plane flies over the airport to burn fuel and reduce its weight so it can land.

The expectation is that Lula will continue traveling on another aircraft to return to Brazil.
