The exchange of accusations between Argentina and Spain increases tension and puts bilateral relations at risk

The President of Argentina, Javier Milei, launched new insults at the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, calling him a Europe’s laughing stock in diplomatic matters. The speech took place on Thursday (May 23, 2024), in an interview broadcast on the Argentine TV channel LN+.

The new series of attacks escalates the bilateral diplomatic crisis triggered by Milei, after he called the Spanish leader’s wife “corrupt“, on May 19th, at an event in Madrid (Spain).

“Ethe [Sánches] He attacked me in every possible way, and when I responded abstractly with an example, he felt he had been approached and used the entire State apparatus to respond to the detriment of a beautiful relationship between the people of Spain and Argentina.”.

The Argentine president once again defined Sánchez as “an incompetent, a liar, a coward”.

The exchange of accusations between Madrid and Buenos Aires became the worst diplomatic crisis in the far-right Argentine leader’s government. In response, Spain announced last Tuesday (May 21), the withdrawal of the Spanish ambassador from the Argentine country.
