The Planalto Palace reacted, this Wednesday (29), to the extension of the United States’ emergency declaration against Brazil, announced the previous day by the White House.
In a statement, the Social Communication Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic stated that “it is entirely unreasonable to characterize Brazil as a threat to the United States”. With the decision, the law authorizes President Donald Trump to adopt economic measures in situations considered emergency.
Brazil is classified as an “unusual and extraordinary” threat to the national security, foreign policy and economy of the United States. The document also criticizes the treatment given to former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), classifying it as political persecution and “deliberate collapse of the rule of law”.
The Brazilian government reiterated that the arguments are “unfounded and untrue” and that the accusations were “widely refuted in meetings between authorities from both countries”.
The note also states that the actions of the Judiciary are guided by compliance with the precepts of the Constitution.
The first emergency declaration was made on July 30, 2025, the same day that Trump announced an additional 40% tariff on products imported from Brazil. The declaration and tariff were ruled illegal by the US Supreme Court.
This time, the extension comes about a week after Trump announced new tariffs on Brazilian products.

Note in response to the extension of the emergency declaration against Brazil by the USA
“The Brazilian Government repudiates the announcement made by the United States Government of the extension for another year of the declaration of national emergency in relation to Brazil.
The statement reiterates unfounded and untrue arguments that Brazil constitutes an “unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy and economy of the United States”, due to alleged “violations of the free expression rights of people and companies in the USA”, “censorship and imprisonment, by the Federal Supreme Court of Brazil, of people exercising freedom of expression”, “human rights violations” and “political persecution of a former president of Brazil, his family and his supporters.”
By rejecting the resumption of accusations without any basis in fact and already widely refuted in meetings between authorities from both countries, Brazil reaffirms its sovereignty and the independence of the Powers of the Union. The Brazilian Judiciary bases its actions on faithful compliance with the precepts of the Federal Constitution.
For any reason, it is entirely unreasonable to characterize Brazil as a threat to the United States, especially in light of the historic diplomatic ties and friendship that unites the two peoples.”
