The trade war between China and the United States won a new chapter on Tuesday (15), with a decision that directly impacts the global aviation sector. In reaction to the imposition of up to 145% tariffs on Chinese products by US President Donald Trump, the Chinese government has determined that its airlines suspend the purchase of aircraft from US manufacturer Boeing, as well as equipment and parts of US companies.
The information, released by Bloomberg agency, represents a hard blow to Boeing, which sees the Chinese market as one of its most promising. The measure also has strategic implications, favoring competitors such as European Airbus and Chinese state manufacturer Comac at a time when the US raises the tone against Beijing.
Boeing in Free Fall: actions fall with ad
The reaction of the markets was not delayed. Boeing shares retreated tightly after the news, falling 1.7% around 4 pm. The American manufacturer already faces a turbulent period, marked by challenges in the supply chain, increased regulatory requirements and reputational damage after security failures on their aircraft.
Now, with Beijing’s new determination, the top three Chinese airlines – Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines – should freeze the plans to incorporate 179 Boeing aircraft by 2027, creating a break in the manufacturer’s schedule.
According to Bloomberg, the Chinese government is still studying financially supporting the Boeing jets and facing costs due to new US tariffs.
Trump hardens speech and rekindles trade war
President Donald Trump has reacted on his social truth, accusing China to “deny business agreements” and “brutal” both US farmers and Boeing. “Our farmers are big, but always placed on the front line. China has no respect for our country under democratic governments,” Trump fired, in another nod to his electoral base.
Chinese retaliation is in line with the previous week’s movement, when the government increased taxes on various US imports to up to 125%. For analysts, the risk is now a total stoppage of bilateral trade, which moved more than $ 650 billion in 2024.
Open space for competitors: Airbus and Embraer gain land
With Boeing on the defensive, their competitors see a window of opportunity. Airbus, which already has a strong presence in the Chinese market, tends to expand its slice. But who surprised was the Brazilian Embraer: the company’s shares led the Ibovespa gains on Tuesday, rising more than 4%, with rumors that it could supply part of the demand repressed by the suspension of contracts with Boeing.
The EMBR3 paper was quoted at R $ 65.17 around 11:15 am, leveraging the main index of the Brazilian scholarship, which operated a slight increase of 0.12%.
Perspectives: Aviation as a key piece of geopolitics
The current clash between China and the United States shows how commercial aviation has become a strategic field in the global dispute by economic and technological influence. Beijing’s decision not only affects Boeing financially, but also represents a clear signage that the country is willing to use its market power to respond to political pressures.
With US elections and growing geopolitical tensions, the aerospace sector may continue to be a bargaining chip in bilateral negotiations. For Boeing, the challenge now is to rebalance its global presence while trying to rebuild the trust of investors and regulators.
The company, so far, has not commented on the Chinese decision.
