Brazil removed citizens from Haiti for humanitarian reasons this Wednesday (10). A group made up of seven Brazilians and a German woman was transported by Itamaraty to the Dominican Republic, “where they are safe”, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
Haitian leaders reached an agreement this weekend on the transitional government that will replace former Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who resigned from power in March amid popular protests against his government and the intensification of armed gangs that they control around 80% of the territory of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
Lasting 22 months, the provisional government’s mission will be to regain control of the country’s capital and create conditions for presidential elections, which should take place within two years, on February 7, 2026. Among the priorities defined in the document are the restoration of public security, the organization of a national conference and constitutional reform.
The agreement was announced by Haiti’s Presidential Transition Council, made up of nine members, who represent the main political parties and organizations in Haitian society. “The political agreement expresses a shared vision of the transition built by the sectors and represents a responsible commitment to the Haitian people”, says the statement released by the Council. Over the weekend, a representative group of leaders from political parties and organizations also signed the final document alongside council members.
The agreement was sent to the regional bloc of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) on Sunday night (7), together with an ordinance that describes the powers, priorities and functions of the proposed presidential council. Council members give themselves control over the new government, which includes the authority to dismiss the next prime minister, as well as the prerogative to appoint the heads of bodies that are being created, such as the National Security Commission.
The document will be forwarded to Ariel Henry, who is in the Dominican Republic after his resignation, awaiting conditions to be able to return to Haiti. Henry and the council of ministers of his ousted government will have to sign the agreement to publish the decree establishing the transitional body in the country’s official gazette, The monitor. Once published, the council will be officially established. The next step will be taking office.
