Brazil called for this sixth (13th) meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the situation of the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

Since the Hamas offensive, last Saturday (7), the State of Israel began an unprecedented siege on the Gaza Strip, with power cuts, blocking of supplies and intensified bombings.

According to Israeli and Palestinian authorities, the number of deaths now exceeds 2,300 people. The survey also does not take into account the 1,500 Hamas militants that Israel claims to have executed at the beginning of the counteroffensive.

According to a survey carried out by Folha de S.Paulo, the last five days of confrontation resulted in more deaths than the total number of deaths in conflicts over the last 20 years in the region of Palestine, Israel and the West Bank. Historically, Palestinians die on a much larger scale.

The data comes from B’Tselem, an Israeli human rights organization that records civilian and military deaths from clashes in the region, and information on recent deaths comes from official bodies on both sides of the conflict.

This is the second meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss this new conflict. Over the weekend, the collegiate met behind closed doors and no statement was issued. On the occasion, Brazil was represented by the ambassador to the UN, Sergio Danese.

Still over the weekend, in a statement, the Itamaraty Palace defended its commitment to the two-state solution, with Palestine and Israel living together in peace and security, within mutually agreed and internationally recognized borders.

Earlier, this Wednesday, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva made an appeal to the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, and the international community, in defense of Palestinian and Israeli children.

After intensifying the bombing against the Gaza Strip in recent days, the Israeli Ministry of Defense reported that it intends to occupy the territory by land, which could increase the number of civilian victims.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, is on his way to New York, in the United States (USA), to personally participate in the UN Security Council meeting. The chancellor was fulfilling an official agenda in Cambodia and, from there, would go to the Philippines, but he postponed his trip to Southeast Asia to attend the emergency meeting, as Brazil presides over the Security Council throughout this month of October, and has the prerogative to call collegiate meetings.
