Approval of President Joe Biden’s administration reaches 36% and registers the lowest level in two years, reveals a Reuters/Ipsos survey. The survey was carried out over four days and ended this Monday (20).
According to Reuters, only 36% of Americans approve of Biden’s performance as president, compared to 38% in April. In April this year, for example, the index was at 38%.
May’s index is the lowest since July 2022 and raises a warning for the Democratic campaign, which faces former president Donald Trump in the electoral rematch in November this year.
Among the reasons for the current discontent of Americans, the economy stands out. For 23% of those interviewed, this is the country’s main problem.
Despite the perception captured by the survey, the American economy has been showing signs of recovery after the fall as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Unemployment, for example, is 3.4%, according to data from the Department of Labor Statistics released in April. In February, the index was at 3.8%.
Inflation in the last twelve months, in turn, did not exceed 3.4%, according to data released by the same department on the 15th.
Still, for 40% of survey respondents, former President Donald Trump, Biden’s main rival in November’s presidential elections, had better policies for the US economy. Another 30% say that the current president is more successful in the area.
When it comes to migration, the Republican is also ahead: 42% of those interviewed prefer his approach, compared to 25% who opt for Biden’s.
