Michal Cohen claims he embezzled $30,000 from a $50,000 payment that was supposed to be made to a technology company

Donald Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen admitted this Monday (May 20, 2024), during a hearing in a New York court, to having stolen from the Trump Organization, the Republican’s company, by embezzling US$30,000 from a payment of US$50,000 that was supposed to be made to a technology company. The information is from Reuters.

Cohen justified the act by saying he was unhappy about losing his company’s annual bonus after sending $130,000 to porn actress Stormy Daniels’ lawyer.as a way of not making public the extramarital affair between Trump and her before the 2016 presidential elections. In total, the Trump Organization reimbursed him US$100,000 of the payment he made to Daniels’ lawyer.

The former lawyer is the main witness in the trial against the former president of the United States, which began on April 15, 2024, in New York. The case investigates the sending of US$130,000 to Stormy Daniels, made in October 2016.

The indictment charges Trump with 34 crimes of “falsification of business records in the 1st degree”alleging that the Republican altered Trump Organization records to hide payments to Michael Cohen, who allegedly facilitated the deal with Daniels.

Also during the hearing this Monday (May 20), the former lawyer stated that he spoke with Trump about paying the porn actress more than 20 times. He said “no doubt” that the former president approved the transfer of the money.

However, Robert Castello, Trump’s witness, said that Cohen, in 2018, told him that he had nothing to say about the Stormy Daniels case to authorities. “He said, ‘I swear to God, Bob, I don’t have anything on Donald Trump.’”he stated.

UNDERSTAND THE STORMY DANIELS CASE

This trial is the 1st of 4 criminal cases against Donald Trump, with an estimated duration of 2 months.

Prosecutors, led by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, argue that Trump committed fraud by disguising these payments as legal expenses, violating state and federal laws.

Trump’s defense, however, claims that the payments were legitimate expenses, denying any attempt to cover up an extramarital affair. Trump pleaded not guilty and tried unsuccessfully to dismiss the case, citing political motivations.

The trial takes place as Trump seeks a second term in the White House in the November elections.
