The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, said that the Global Alliance against Hunger will be one of the greatest contributions of the Brazilian presidency at the head of the G20, a group formed by the 19 largest economies in the world plus the African Union and the European Union.
Vieira highlighted that the program, to be launched on November 18th and 19th, in Rio de Janeiro, during the Leaders’ Summit, already brings together 50 countries and other international organizations.
“This is more than the composition of the G20. International organizations will also participate, such as the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the World Bank and others. The issue of fighting hunger, poverty and inequality in the world will be Brazil’s great contribution to the G20”, said the chancellor in an interview with the Bom Dia, Minister program, from Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC).
The chancellor highlighted that this alliance is a personal project of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and brings together not only countries that want to contribute financially, but also those that have programs in the area to serve as an experiment.

“Recently I visited Bangladesh, which has a very good and effective anti-hunger program with necessary characteristics and common points with our country. [programa]. As I said: you will not only have financial resources, but access to knowledge and it will be possible to share information on a platform”, explained Vieira.
The priority issues established by the Brazilian government are the fight against hunger, poverty and inequality, the three dimensions of sustainable development (economic, social and environmental) and the reform of global governance.
Throughout the year, work meetings are being held in host cities in the five regions of Brazil. The purpose is to decentralize activities, transform the G20 into a more representative forum and prepare the Leaders’ Summit.
The chancellor said that Brazil has other important contributions and cited as an example the international fund to help countries in the case of a pandemic similar to Covid-19.
“It is a great initiative in the area of health that is being led by Minister Nísia Trindade (Health). A call will be made to contribute resources to a fund, promotion of medicines and a mechanism that can combat pandemics like the one we unfortunately had,” he said.
The minister stated that the G20 is an important mechanism for coordination and exchange of information between countries that are not only the largest economies in the world, but also important developing economies in the so-called countries of the Global South.
Repatriation
Vieira also spoke about the operation to rescue Brazilians in Lebanon. “It is a large operation. It will be bigger than the operation in Palestine, the Gaza Strip and Israel last year, when approximately 1,560 people were rescued. Now, projections and expectations are greater. Around three thousand people are in contact with the Brazilian Embassy in Beirut”, he explained.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs said that there is constant contact, a dialogue between the embassy and the Brazilian community.
“A contact system via email, WhatsApp, groups that bring together Brazilians in the region. There are around 20 thousand Brazilians who live in Beirut, around other cities in Lebanon and a large number expressed interest in returning”, he detailed.
