Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) used his social media profiles, on Sunday (June 9, 2024), to celebrate the results of the elections for the European Parliament. According to projections, the right emerged as the big winner.
“Europe shows that the popular will prevails without certain interference and will soon be repeated in other parts of the world”, wrote the former president in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“The entire establishment is foaming with hatred and distributing its fake news to spread in the newsrooms, shrill with the people they want so much to keep quiet.”, he added. “The victory of the people shows that the agendas imposed by the system are not satisfying their wishes.”
ELECTIONS
From Thursday (June 6) to Sunday (June 9), voters from the 27 member countries of the EU (European Union) went to the polls to vote for their representatives in the European Parliament.
The right emerged as the big winner. According to projections updated at 9pm by the electoral commission, the European People’s Party, led by Ursula von der Leyen, current president of the European Commission, maintained the largest group in the European Union Legislature and won 13 more seats, leaving it with 189 deputies.
Other nationalist groups advanced in Parliament. Identity and Democracy and European Reformists and Conservatives won seats. With the new composition, right-wing and center-right deputies will be 402 of the total 720, a dominance of 56%. There were 396 before.
