The death of the physicist, who discovered the “God Particle”, was announced by the University of Edinburgh
English physicist Peter Higgs, known for discovering the “Higgs Boson” particle, died at the age of 94 on Monday (April 8, 2024). The announcement was made by the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, where Higgs had been professor emeritus since 1996.
The cause of death was not disclosed. Higgs “passed away peacefully at home” after facing a brief illness, the institution reported.
Along with physicist François Englert, Higgs won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013 for the discovery of the Higgs Boson, one of the biggest scientific guesses of the 20th century.
Popularly known as the “God Particle”, the Higgs Boson is part of the Standard Model, a theory that explains the origin of matter after the formation of the universe. The physicist predicted this particle in 1964, but the LHC particle accelerator only confirmed its existence in 2012.
Peter Higgs was born in 1929 in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, England, and graduated with honors from King’s College of London. In the 1980s, he joined the traditional Royal Society, the United Kingdom’s national academy of science. He taught actively at the University of Edinburgh from 1980 to 1996.
