Donald Trump classified this Monday (4) as a “great victory” for the United States the decision of the American Supreme Court to reject the attempt to remove him from the Republican primaries in the state of Colorado, for allegedly having participated in an insurrection.
“GREAT VICTORY FOR THE UNITED STATES!!!”, wrote the former president, favorite for the Republican nomination in November’s presidential elections, on his social network, Truth Social.
The Supreme Court’s decision was made unanimously. The nine judges considered that only Congress, and not a state, is authorized to eliminate a candidate from the ballot.
The decision was revealed on the eve of “Super Tuesday”, when 15 states, including Colorado, vote simultaneously to choose the Republican party candidate. Trump is the clear favorite.
Four cases, 91 charges
Twenty days after Super Tuesday, Trump will become the first former US president to be tried criminally in history. In New York, he faces 34 charges related to falsifying official documents in order to hide a bribe payment to former adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
Three other cases against him are underway in Washington, Atlanta and Miami. In the country’s capital, he is accused of trying to interfere in the 2020 elections with the aim of remaining in power, during the episode of the invasion of the Capitol.
In Miami, the case against Trump is related to secret documents found in his home in Mar-a-Lago after the end of his term. The former president is accused of withholding documents, showing them to people without authorization and trying to obstruct justice.
In Atlanta, as in Washington, Donald Trump responds to accusations regarding attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The difference between the two is that the Atlanta case is a state case and concerns attempts to change the results of the vote in the Georgia.
Recent news agency survey Reuters indicated that 51% of Republicans would not vote for Trump in the event of a conviction in either case and that 25% responded that they were not sure.
