Pope Leo 14 announced this Sunday (11), after the Angelus – traditional public prayer held on Sundays – that he will undergo surgery to remove a nodule in his lung.

He reported that doctors recommended intervention, but that the nodule was identified at an early stage and “is well located”. The medical intervention is scheduled for the next few days at the Gemelli Policlinico Hospital.

Leo 14 thanked all the faithful “for their spiritual closeness”. “I entrust myself to your prayers!” concluded the Pope.

The director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, informed, during a press conference, that “the intervention is scheduled for the first few days of next week and that the expected period of post-operative hospitalization is about a week”.

Pope Leo 14 is 71 years old and assumed the pontificate in May 2025 after the death of Pope Francis in April of the same year.
