The first results of votes abroad are beginning to arrive and should have an impact on the electoral results. In Haiti, however, among the 30 Brazilians eligible to vote, abstention must be high.

According to Cha Dafol, Brasil de Fato correspondent in Haiti, a maximum of 10 registered votes are expected. This is because, despite the Brazilian embassy being in an area considered safe for the country, voters are widely spread across the territory and traveling is expensive and dangerous.

“Government institutions cannot function in Port-au-Prince because the city is taken over by gangs. So all the elite and government are in Pition Ville, which is where the Brazilian embassy is located”, he explains.

“Foreigners who come here to make money and explore the country stay in this region. We have to analyze who is going to vote.”

In 2022, 5 Brazilian votes were recorded in Haiti in both rounds respectively, and former president Jair Bolsonaro won in both, with 3 votes against 2 for current president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

The journalist says that these results can be explained by logistical disparities, since “the majority of Brazilians who are here do not vote”.

“The activists who vote for the left and who are in the interior, who are closer to the people and popular movements, cannot vote”, he says.

“The region where most of the embassies are located is a very rich region, where the elite are located and have a vision that does not mix much with the people. So these are the people who have the most access to voting centers”, says Dafol.

Non-external vote

Several countries have already closed polls abroad and the first unofficial results are beginning to come out. According to information published in various media outlets, President Lula has already won in China, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Palestine, France, Singapore and South Korea. Flávio Bolsonaro was victorious in Israel, Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, Hong Kong and South Africa.
