The spokesman for the Russian presidency, Dmitry Peskov, declared this Wednesday (30) that Russian embassies in Europe have been reminding Western countries of the consequences in the event of a blockade of the Kaliningrad region.
The Russian Embassy in Ireland declared last Tuesday (30) that, if NATO countries try to isolate the region, Russia will be prepared to use its entire arsenal, including nuclear weapons.
The diplomatic mission noted that the European Union and NATO are stepping up military activity along Russia’s western border, carrying out security exercises and participating in “advanced deterrence” initiatives that include the deployment of French nuclear weapons near Russian borders.
The Russian embassy’s publication on social media comes in the context of information released in the press that NATO was preparing for an air and sea blockade of the Kaliningrad region.
“There should be no doubt that Russia will be prepared to use its entire arsenal, including nuclear weapons, to defend its territory if NATO countries attempt to isolate the Kaliningrad region from the rest of the country,” says the statement from the Russian embassy in Ireland.
On the same day, the Russian embassy in the United Kingdom stated that those proposing a blockade of Kaliningrad should have no illusions about the consequences. As early as September 28, the Russian embassy in Belgium stated that it was observing an unprecedented increase in NATO military activity near Russia’s western borders and emphasized that Russia “possesses the necessary means to repel any potential aggression.”
In response, NATO stated that none of the alliance’s exercises or activities pose a threat to Russian territory. “We urge the Russian Federation to refrain from increasingly reckless behavior towards its allies and to cease irresponsible nuclear rhetoric,” the Western military alliance says.
Commenting on the tension between Moscow and NATO, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said this Wednesday (30) that the statements made by the Western alliance countries about Kaliningrad are “outrageous”.
“We have repeatedly heard quite outrageous statements from Poland and other European countries, which also addressed the Kaliningrad issue. Therefore, it is perfectly natural that our diplomats are trying to remind extremists in Europe of our policy documents on this issue,” Peskov said during a press conference.
The Russian presidential spokesman referred to statements by Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski on September 11, when he stated that NATO should carry out sufficiently “aggressive” military exercises in the vicinity of Kaliningrad to leave Moscow uncertain about the alliance’s intentions and thus force Russia to move troops from Ukraine to the region.
