US senators Jeanne Shaheen, Peter Welch and Tim Kaine, from the Democratic Party, questioned, this Monday (28), the Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, whether Donald Trump’s government will recognize the results of the elections in Brazil.
“Will the (US) government commit to recognizing the certified result of the 2026 democratic elections in Brazil and to supporting normal diplomatic relations with any candidate who is freely and fairly chosen by the Brazilian people?”, the senators wrote.
Parliamentarians asked for a formal response on this position in relation to the Brazilian elections and also on Washington’s actions in relation to Latin American allies. The Trump administration has not yet responded.
The three senators expressed “concern about actions by the (US) government that threaten our strategic alliance with Brazil” and again highlighted an alleged attempt at interference by Washington. Last week, other US congressmen, such as Bernie Sanders, had already accused Rubio about this.
“Throughout President Trump’s second term, we have observed US officials engaging in a campaign of interference and destabilization in Brazil,” the letter says.
The senators point to the appointment of Darren Beattie as senior advisor for issues related to Brazil at the US State Department as signs of interference. He is a far-right politician and a strong critic of the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
And also the tariff applied against Brazil, as determined by Trump.
