A mission from the United Nations (UN) states that there is evidence that the United States committed war crimes during the military attacks on February 28 against Iran, which hit a children’s school in Minab and a sports complex in Lamerd, causing the deaths of 178 people, most of them children.
“Following the attacks by the United States and Israel on February 28, the mission found reasonable grounds to believe that the United States committed the war crime of launching indiscriminate attacks that resulted in loss of life or injury to civilians or damage to civilian property,” assesses the investigation team.
The report was announced this Thursday (17) and will be sent to the UN Human Rights Council.
The investigations focused on the bombing of the Shajareh Tayyebeh children’s school in Minab, in the province of Hormozgan, in the south of the country; and in the attack against the sports complex and the residential area of Lamerd, both carried out by the United States.
In the case of the children’s school, the UN mission identified that a North American Tomahawk cruise missile hit a “clearly identifiable” civilian installation. Investigators point out that there is no evidence that the site was being used for military purposes, as claimed by the US army.
“The US targeted the strikes at the school building, being aware of a substantial risk of hitting a civilian target and acting recklessly regarding the possibility of this occurring,” the UN team says.
The situation was repeated in the attack on the sports complex and the residential area in Lamerd, which were “clearly identifiable” civilian installations. The mission highlights that precision attack missiles spread tungsten projectiles over the site, causing damage to residential buildings and a nearby school, causing the deaths of 22 people.
On the Iranian side, UN investigators also analyzed government repression during protests that took place in the country at the end of last year.
