Hundreds of residents of Kuhestak, in the south of Iran, attended last Thursday (3) the funeral of the victims of the American attack that hit a wedding party in the city at the beginning of the week. On top of a pickup truck, covered by the Iranian flag, was the coffin of four-year-old Amir-Mohammad Karimi. He was one of those killed by the attack, being the only child.
The missile fell at around 9:30 pm last Monday (1st) on a house where the celebration was taking place. Kuhestak is located in Sirik County, Hormozgan Province, on a stretch of the coast of the Strait of Hormuz, through which oil trade routes pass, and is one of the points of greatest tension since the start of the war between the United States and Iran.
US authorities say the target would be a telecommunications tower about 135 meters from the residence. An analysis of the agency Reutersbased on four weapons experts, showed that the house was hit directly by US weapons.
Meanwhile, Iran reported at least four deaths. In addition to Karimi, a 16-year-old teenager and two adults died. The deputy governor of Hormozgan estimated almost 70 victims, including dead and injured. Authorities warn that the death toll could rise, as some of the injured are in critical condition.
In a statement to the British newspaper The Guardianthe guests reported the moment of the attack. “I still hear the voices of the happy women and, suddenly, the ceiling of the room and the walls collapsed on us”, commented Zeinad Mallahi.
Asked about the episode, US Vice President JD Vance minimized the deaths. “Sometimes, things happen,” the official responded, saying he was “extremely skeptical” about the Iranian reports and maintaining that the US Army does not attack civilians in combat. “We’re investigating, because obviously we care, we want to know. If we make mistakes, that’s a big difference between us and Iran: When our military makes mistakes, they learn to try to improve,” Vance said.
Meanwhile, the International Red Cross Movement filed a representation at the International Criminal Court (ICC), the first against the US since the start of the war. The group calls for “an independent, impartial, thorough and effective investigation”. The Iranian ambassador to the UN, Gholamhossein Darzi, charged the Security Council and classified the bombing as a war crime.
Attacks between the US and Iran have intensified in recent days. In the early hours after the wedding, Tehran launched missiles and drones against US bases in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates in retaliation.
