In Brasília, a meeting with deputies and senators seeks to open a channel of dialogue and preserve relations between the two nations
The Minister of Institutional Relations, José Guimarães (PT), received this Wednesday (September 2, 2026), at the Palácio do Planalto, a delegation of Argentine deputies. The delegation came to Brasília in an attempt to bring the two countries closer together, after the escalation of tension between the president Javier Miley (Liberty Advances, direita) eo president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
The delegation is led by Peronist senator Maria Florencia Lopez, deputy Nicolás Massot, from Encuentro Federal, and deputy from the Radical Civic Union and former Minister of Economy, Martín Lousteau. The group brings together congressmen from different political persuasions. The members also include Germán Martínez, Victoria Tolosa Paz, Esteban Paulón, Maximiliano Ferraro, Oscar Herrera Ahuad and Eduardo Falcone.
The agenda in Brasília began on Tuesday (September 1), when Argentines met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, at Itamaraty. They were received by the substitute Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Maria Laura da Rocha.
This Wednesday (September 2), in addition to Guimarães, the group will have meetings in the Senate with members of the Foreign Relations and Defense Committee and also with members of the Brazil-Argentina Parliamentary Group.
According to Guimarães, the congressmen stated that Milei’s attitude towards Lula does not represent the majority of politics or the Argentine population.
DIPLOMACY SHAKEN
The move comes after one of the greatest diplomatic tensions between Brazil and Argentina since the redemocratization of the 2 countries. The episode worsened after Milei participated, on July 25, in the PL national convention that made official Flavio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) as a candidate for President. The Argentine declared support for the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro.
During the event, in São Paulo, Milei criticized Lula and called Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court, a “bald trash”. Days later, he again insulted the Brazilian president, calling him a “burglar” e “corrupt”.
The statements led the Brazilian government to toughen its response. On August 4, Brazil decided to downgrade the level of diplomatic representation in Buenos Aires. The Brazilian ambassador, Julio Bitelli, remained in Brazil, while minister-counselor Eduardo Uziel began to be responsible for representation as charge d’affaires.
Itamaraty also publicly demanded a change of attitude from Milei. On August 8, Mauro Vieira stated that the Argentine president should stop aggressions against Brazilian institutions so that it would be possible to return to normality in the bilateral relationship.
