The measure comes into force on September 8 and will be equivalent, “dollar for dollar”, to the 50% taxation adopted by Trump

The Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, announced this Saturday (22 August 2026) that the country will apply tariffs on products imported from the United States from September 8th. The measure is a response to the new 50% tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump (Republican Party) on Canadian products. The information is from Reuters.

According to Carney, the retaliation will be equivalent to the tariffs adopted by Washington. “Canada will apply tariffs equivalent to Washington’s new tariffs, dollar for dollar, to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses.”he said in an interview with journalists in Ottawa.

Canadian tariffs will affect sectors such as steel, dairy, household appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper and electronics. Products currently subject to US tariffs based on Sections 232 and 338 will also be included.

US RATES

The decision was announced after Canada and the United States ended a round of trade negotiations on Friday (21 August) without reaching an agreement.

Trump’s new tariffs came into force at midnight this Saturday (Aug 22) and affect around US$20 billion in Canadian exports to the United States. Affected products include wine, furniture, dairy products, cement, clothing, fishing rods and hockey equipment.

The measures also affect Canadian goods that previously benefited from the USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement). The treaty had protected most of Canada’s exports to the North American market over the past 18 months.

“We cannot accept what they offered and we will not grant what they asked for”declared Carney.

The new measures increase commercial tension between the 2 countries, trading partners and members of the free trade agreement that also includes Mexico.
