BRICS countries unanimously adopted a joint declaration on disaster risk reduction during a ministerial meeting held in New Delhi. The document reaffirms the group’s commitment to expanding cooperation, encouraging innovation and building more resilient societies. The information was released by the Government of India’s Press Information Bureau (PIB).
The third BRICS Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction was chaired by India’s Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai. According to him, preventing natural disasters and reducing their impacts are essential measures for development, adaptation to climate change and the safety of the population.
Participants discussed the development of infrastructure resilient to climate risks, the improvement of financing mechanisms, the use of innovative technologies and the expansion of international cooperation in preventing emergencies.
The implementation of the BRICS Work Plan for 2025–2028 received special attention. Countries agreed to strengthen cooperation in science and technology, develop early warning systems, increase the resilience of infrastructure and local communities, and intensify the exchange of experiences and good practices.
During the Indian presidency, six analytical and methodological materials were also presented to support decision-making, strengthen specialized institutions and expand the capacity of BRICS countries in the area of disaster risk reduction.
At the end of the meeting, the ministers agreed to expand practical cooperation through joint projects and exercises, exchange of experts and regular thematic consultations. These initiatives should increase the capacity of BRICS countries to face natural and climate threats.
The meeting brought together ministers and heads of delegation from member countries during the Indian presidency of BRICS in 2026.
