In his 1st speech after being re-elected for the 3rd time, Chinese leader said he will reconcile development and security

The President of China, Xi Jinping, said this Monday (13.Mar.2023) that he will strengthen the country’s security and transform the Armed Forces into a “steel wall” to effectively protect national sovereignty.

In his 1st speech at the National People’s Congress after being elected for the 3rd time to lead the country, Xi Jinping promised to better reconcile the Asian power’s development and security. “A security is the basis of development and stability is the prerequisite for prosperity”declared.

The Chinese leader also spoke about Taiwan. claimed to oppose “resolutely to outside interference and separatist independence activities” from the island.

Earlier this Monday, the agency Reuters disclosed that the UK would have increased its export of submarine parts and technology to Taiwan. In response, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that “If this is true, it is a serious violation of the One China principle”.

Xi Jinping was re-elected for his 3rd term on friday (10.mar). About 3,000 members of the Chinese Congress unanimously voted for the president. The election had no other candidate.

The leader of the Chinese Communist Party has held the presidency of the country since 2013. The new term will last for 5 years. Considered the main Chinese leader since Mao Tse Tung, Xi in 2018 lifted presidential term limits, until then of 10 years. With that, he became able to lead the country until at least 2027.
