The US military Central Command will provide assistance to the Palestinians through a temporary pier in the region

The United States Central Command, responsible for the Army, announced this Friday (May 17, 2024) the start of an operation to provide assistance in Gaza. The action uses a temporary pier created to receive aid through the maritime humanitarian aid corridor.

US Army troops, however, did not land in Gaza, according to the Central Command statement. Aid for the Palestinians has donations provided by several countries and humanitarian organizations. Here is the full statement (PDF – 110 kB).

The deputy spokesperson for the UN (United Nations), Farhan Haq, praised the initiative to conduct aid, according to him, without political or military interference.

“We are grateful to the United States, with the support of other Member States [da ONU]for supporting the maritime corridor as an additional route for aid to Gaza”these.

Haq also stated that almost 640,000 people left Rafah after the Israeli invasion in early May. Now, part of the humanitarian efforts should be destined to guarantee housing for the homeless.

Ceasefire negotiations

Hamas said it had accepted the proposal to establish a ceasefire in Gaza.

The Palestinian extremist group said it agrees with the terms of the agreement brokered by Egypt and Qatar to stop the conflict that began on October 7, 2023. However, Israeli authorities refuse to accept the proposal.
