The UN General Assembly approved this Tuesday (3) a resolution that envisages holding an international conference in June 2025 to discuss the creation of the Palestinian State. The proposal, presented by Senegal, received 157 votes in favor, eight against and seven abstentions. Among those who voted against were Israel, Argentina and the United States.

The General Assembly said the two states should “live side by side in peace and security within recognized borders, based on pre-1967 borders,” expressing “unwavering support, in accordance with international law, for the two-state solution of Israel and Palestine.”

The approved resolution demands that Israel “put an end to its illegal presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory as quickly as possible, immediately cease all new settlement activities and evacuate all settlers from the Occupied Palestinian Territory, as well as put an end to its illegal acts.”

According to the UN, the approved resolution aims to reiterate the call for a “comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East”. In addition to providing for the conference to be held next year, the approved text reaffirms support for the two-state solution, one Jewish and the other Palestinian, “living side by side in peace and security within recognized borders”.

Palestinian envoy to the UN, Riyad Mansour, stated that “the issue of Palestine has been on the UN agenda since the organization’s inception and remains the most critical test of its credibility and authority and of the very existence of a law-based international order.” .”

The Brazilian government has historically defended the two-state solution. The topic was debated during the G20 summit held in November in Rio de Janeiro. It also appeared for the first time in the leaders’ final statement.

The so-called “two-state solution” is the project for the creation of a Palestinian state that coexists peacefully with the Israeli one. The idea is based on the borders established before the 1967 conflict.

The initiative for the conference in 2025 is part of a diplomatic offensive by the Palestinians, after it became clear that the lack of a state was one of the reasons that allowed Israel to carry out an attack on Gaza without any constraints.
