Draft resolution allows, among others, the observing State to present proposals and request the right of reply
The UN General Assembly (United Nations) approved this Friday (May 10, 2024) the granting of new rights to the State of Palestine, which will come into force from September 10th. The vote had 143 votes in favor, 9 against and 25 abstentions.
Although the draft resolution presented by the United Arab Emirates maintains Palestine as a member without full rights in the international body, it allows the State to present proposals, request the right to reply during debates and make requests for changes to the UN agenda. The text also demands that the entity reconsider Palestinian membership as a full member of the organization.
The following voted against the draft resolution: United States, Israel, Argentina, Czech Republic, Hungary, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Papua New Guinea.
US Deputy Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood justified the American position saying that the vote does not reflect opposition to the creation of the State of Palestine, but that this would only be possible with a direct solution between Israelis and Palestinians.
“The U.S. view is that the quickest path to statehood and UN membership for the Palestinian people is through direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, with the support of the United States and other partners.”these.
In April, the United States vetoed in the UN Security Council the accession of the State of Palestine as a member of the United Nations with full rights. North Americans have this power because they are permanent members of the collegiate – with veto power.
PALESTINE’S ACCESSION PROCESS TO THE UN
On September 23, 2011, the State of Palestine requested membership in the UN. The request was an attempt to end ongoing tensions between Israelis and Palestinians and enforce the 2-State solution. Here is the full request made in 2011 (PDF – 36 kB, in English).
In a document sent to the UN Secretary General in 2011, the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, stated that he had the honor of, as the “sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people”say that the State of Palestine is “lover” of peace and that accepts to fulfill the obligations contained in the Charter of the United Nations.
Despite the petition, the Palestinian state was never admitted as a full member of the UN. Instead, the following year, in 2012, the Palestinians obtained status of observer.
