For Zelensky’s government, Brazil “must use its good relationship with Moscow to help end the war”
The Ukrainian government insists that Brazil participate in the peace summit in Switzerland to discuss a unilateral peace proposal that will help end the war between Russia and Ukraine. The meeting will take place in June and the Russia will not participate. According to diplomatic sources, the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) never considered going. The information is from the newspaper The globe.
The government of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sees Brazil as an important coordinator in negotiations due to its diplomatic proximity to Russia.
“Brazil has an important global role, with extensive relations with Russia, and should use its good relationship with Moscow to help end the war. If all countries with good relations with Russia used that relationship to help end the war, Russia would feel more isolated.”said the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, in a meeting with Latin American journalists on Monday (May 27, 2024).
According to Kuleba, 80 countries have already confirmed their presence at the Peace Summit, which is scheduled for June 15th and 16th in the Lucerne region, Switzerland.
On Thursday (May 23) Brazil and China formalized a proposal for a meeting to be held with equal participation between Russia and Ukraine.
Zelensky’s government said the proposal will not be met. “Those who, like Brazil, want Russia to be at the negotiating table are based on the books of traditional diplomacy. We are based on the reality in Russia. Russia only has good faith when it feels weak on the battlefield.”these Kuleba.
For the Ukrainian chancellor, Brazil sees the war from its relationship with Russia. “We ask Brazil to look at Ukraine without Russian glasses. If Russia wins in Ukraine, who will benefit? Nobody”he stated.
On May 2, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that a negotiation without Russia’s presence is “impossible”. “What kind of conference can we talk about, with serious expectations of some kind of result, without the participation of Russia?”he questioned.
