Several countries have suspended relations with Israel due to the genocide carried out in Gaza. Last Thursday (2), Turkey announced the suspension of trade relations. The country had already controlled exports in April. This is a global trend to put pressure on Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right government, as did Bolivia and Colombia, which suspended diplomatic relations.

The Turkish Ministry of Commerce reported that the measure will be valid until Israel allows humanitarian aid to enter Gaza on an ongoing basis.

Israel’s problematic Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, who has already caused trouble with Brazilian diplomacy, accuses Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of blocking the flow of trade at ports, calling him a dictator for ignoring agreements on social media .

Erdogan has been a harsh critic of Israeli actions, which he calls a “terrorist state”.

Trade relations between the countries were worth US$6.8 billion in 2023. While Turkey receives petroleum products, Israel buys iron and steel as its main products.

The Israeli offensive has already left more than 34,000 Palestinians dead and 77,000 injured. Hunger is felt by practically the entire population of Gaza, estimated at 2.3 million people.
