United States President Donald Trump’s approval rating fell to 40%, equaling the lowest level of his term, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll concluded on Sunday (26). The share of those who disapprove of the government rose to 57%, amid growing dissatisfaction with the cost of living and the perception that inflation has once again weighed on American families.
Since taking office in January, Trump has promised to control prices and restore household purchasing power, but the pace of inflation has increased while the job market has weakened.
The Federal Reserve, the North American central bank, reduced interest rates to try to contain the effects of the slowdown, without being able to reverse pessimism. Among voters, the group of those who disapprove of the way the president deals with domestic costs is now twice as large as those who approve.
The government is facing the second longest shutdown in United States history, but the political impasse has had limited repercussions on public opinion.
According to the survey, 50% of those interviewed said they were frustrated with the shutdown, 20% were angry and 29% said they did not care or even approved the closure. The majority assessed that the crisis had little or no direct impact on their lives, which reinforces the perception that the focus of concerns is on the domestic economy, not on the disputes in Washington.
In Congress, the clash between Democrats and Republicans continues to block the approval of the budget. Opponents refuse to vote on spending projects until the White House agrees to extend health insurance subsidies, which expire at the end of the year.
The measure has the support of 73% of Americans, even in the face of criticism about the fiscal impact, which highlights a growing distance between the austerity agenda defended by Trump and the popular preference for social policies.
The combination of inflation, political impasse and falling confidence in the economy consolidated a scenario of stagnation for the president. With his popularity stuck at its lowest level since the beginning of his term, Trump faces the risk of entering 2026 under increasing pressure, supported only by the most loyal core of his electorate.
