Users will have to show that they are single, undergo an interview to check identity and prove income

The government of Tokyo, the capital of Japan, will launch a dating app in the coming months in an attempt to increase the birth rate, an official in the city reported on Tuesday (June 4, 2024).

To use the app, people will have to prove that they are legally single and sign a document stating that they are willing to get married. Users must also present proof of income and undergo an interview to confirm their identity.

“We know that 70% of people who want to get married do not actively participate in events or apps looking for a partner,” a Tokyo government official told the news agency on condition of anonymity. AFP. “We want to give them a little push to find a partner.”

The application has been in the testing phase since the end of 2023.

In 2023, births in Japan fell 5.1% to at least 758,631, according to preliminary official data. This was the 8th consecutive year of a drop in birth rates. At the same time, the number of deaths was 1,590,503, more than double the number of births.

Because of the low birth rate, the country has a labor shortage. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida promised to put public policies in place to help couples decide to have children, such as providing financial assistance to families, facilitating access to child care and increasing parental leave.
