Russia has signaled positively to the possibility of negotiating peace with Ukraine, as indicated by the spokesman for Vladimir Putin’s government, Dmitry Peskov, this Thursday (25). The position was expressed after the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmitro Kuleba, indicated the same availability.

On Wednesday (24), during Kuleba’s visit to China, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the host country issued a note about a meeting between the Ukrainian and Chinese Chancellor Wang Yi, which reportedly lasted three hours.

The statement said that, according to Kuleba, “the Ukrainian side is ready for dialogue and negotiations with the Russian side. Of course, negotiations must be reasonable and substantive, aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace.”

The next day, Peskov said in response that “the message itself, one might say, is in unison with our position. You know that the Russian side has never refused negotiations. It has always remained open. Details that we do not yet know are important here, we will wait for further clarification.”

The fact that both countries are sending signals that they are opening up space for negotiations is an important step towards ending the war. Another process to end the conflict ended without progress in 2022.

In May, Brazil and China presented a joint proposal to promote peace negotiations that would include the participation of Ukraine and Russia, aiming for “equal participation of all relevant parties, in addition to a fair discussion of all peace plans”.
